Ground Source Heat Pumps

Ground source heat pumps use pipes buried in the ground to extract heat from the earth, which can be used to heat radiators, water or under-floor heating systems.

Under the surface, the ground stays at a fairly constant temperature throughout the year, so a ground source heat pump can be used even in the middle of winter.

The pump circulates a mixture of water and antifreeze around a ground loop that is buried in the garden. Heat from the ground is absorbed and pumped through a heat exchanger then passed through a compressor that raises the temperature so it’s capable of providing hot water and central heating. The cooled fluid is then pumped back into the ground where it absorbs more heat in a continuous process.

The benefits of ground source heat pumps are clear: they can lower domestic fuel bills and help to reduce a building’s carbon footprint. Once installed, they require little maintenance and no fuel deliveries.

At BJ Barkwell & Sons, we have the skills and resources to install ground source heating systems at large-scale building developments as well as on smaller projects. Our expertise, built on 40 years of reliable and trustworthy service, has expanded to meet current demands and new developments.
